Fan Systems Nuclear Fans

We supply specialist ventilation fans to nuclear facilities across the UK and overseas, supporting new build projects, current operating sites, and decommissioning programmes. Our experience spans safety-critical environments where compliance, traceability and performance verification are paramount.

We work closely with leading organisations including Sellafield, contributing to the ongoing development and enhancement of nuclear ventilation standards. As active members of the National Nuclear Ventilation Forum, we are directly involved in discussions surrounding the nuclear standards applied across major UK nuclear sites.

Frequently

Asked Questions

What makes nuclear fans different from standard industrial fans?

Nuclear fans must meet extraordinary reliability and safety requirements not found in conventional applications. They require nuclear-grade materials with certified traceability, qualification for radiation exposure and ageing, seismic certification for continued operation during earthquakes, gas-tight construction preventing radioactive release, decontaminable surfaces for maintenance in contaminated areas, and Class 1E components for safety systems. Additionally, the documentation requirements are extensive, with every component tracked from raw material through decades of operation.

We maintain KTA 1401 certification (German nuclear quality standard), authorisation under Radiation Protection Ordinance §15, compliance with RCC-M (French nuclear design code), familiarity with ASME Section III requirements, IEEE 344 seismic qualification capability, and ISO 9001:2015 with nuclear extensions. Our quality system covers design, manufacture, testing, installation, and through-life support. We’re approved suppliers to major nuclear operators including EDF, RWE, E.ON, and Vattenfall.
Yes, our safety-related nuclear fans are qualified for Design Basis Accident (DBA) conditions including Loss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA) with high temperature and humidity, station blackout with battery backup operation, seismic events up to Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) levels, and post-accident radiation environments. Fans undergo environmental qualification testing simulating accident conditions, demonstrating continued operation at 100% humidity, temperatures to 200°C, and radiation doses exceeding 10⁶ Gy.
Seismic qualification follows a rigorous multi-stage process: seismic analysis using finite element methods, comparison against required response spectra (RRS), shake table testing of full-scale units or scaled models, demonstration of structural integrity and operational continuity, and comprehensive test reports for regulatory submission. We qualify fans for both Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) levels, ensuring continued operation during and after seismic events.
Nuclear projects receive comprehensive documentation packages including: design basis documents and calculations, material certificates with full traceability, manufacturing and test records, seismic and environmental qualification reports, operation and maintenance manuals, spare parts recommendations for 60-year life, decommissioning data for end-of-life planning, and configuration management throughout plant lifetime. All documentation meets regulatory requirements for safety case submissions and periodic safety reviews.
Yes, our nuclear service division includes radiation-qualified workers authorised under §15 of the Radiation Protection Ordinance. We provide: planned maintenance during outages, emergency response for critical systems, remote inspection using specialised equipment, decontamination and refurbishment services, modification and upgrade programmes, and radiation dose planning and ALARA compliance. Our technicians maintain radiation passports and follow strict contamination control procedures, ensuring safe, efficient maintenance within controlled areas.
